Well versus rainwater catchment is one of the biggest early decisions on an off-grid property — the right answer depends heavily on your local geology, climate, and state regulations, not just cost.
Drilled Wells
A well taps groundwater directly, giving you a consistent supply that doesn’t depend on recent rainfall — a real advantage in dry climates or drought years. The tradeoff is upfront cost: drilling depth varies enormously by region, and you won’t know the exact cost or even whether you’ll hit reliable water until the driller is on-site. Neighboring wells’ depth and yield are the best predictor you’ll have before drilling your own.
Rainwater Catchment
Catchment systems are far cheaper to install than a well and scale easily — add more roof collection area or storage as needed. The obvious tradeoff is dependence on actual rainfall; a catchment system sized for average rainfall can come up short in a genuinely dry year, so oversizing storage relative to average rainfall is worth the extra cost.
Check Your State’s Rules First
Rainwater harvesting legality varies significantly by state — some states have no restrictions, others cap collection volume or require permits, and a few have historically restricted it due to water rights law. Check your specific state’s regulations before designing a system around it, since this can genuinely rule out catchment as your primary source in some locations.
Most Homesteads Use Both
