Number of Bales
Once you enter the approximate weight of your bale, the calculator estimates how many bales you’ll need. This matters because “20 bales” doesn’t tell you much without knowing bale weight.
How Much Hay Does an Animal Need?
There is no universal number. A 1,000-pound animal isn’t automatically going to require the same amount of forage as another 1,000-pound animal.
Requirements can vary because of species, breed, age, pregnancy, lactation, growth, work/activity, body condition, hay quality, weather, and pasture availability. Horses commonly consume around 2% of body weight in hay per day, while cattle forage-use calculations can fall in a different range depending on conditions and whether pasture losses are included.

Don’t Forget Hay Quality
Two bales that weigh exactly the same can provide very different nutritional value. Hay quality depends on plant species, maturity at harvest, storage conditions, moisture, nutrient content, and mold or contamination.

Storage Loss Can Cost You More Than You Think

Your stored-forage period might be 30, 60, 90, 120, or 180 days, or an entire winter. Then add an appropriate reserve for unexpected weather, pasture problems, or supply interruptions.
